BBE, NTCL explore cost-efficient west coast shipping corridor

BBE and NTCL are teaming up to develop a new shipping corridor for their customers in the Western Arctic.

When it comes to expediting cargo to the North, no one does it better than Braden-Burry Expediting (BBE). When it comes to transporting industrial and community dry cargo and fuel to remote Northern locations, Northern Transportation Company Ltd. (NTCL) is the unquestionable leader. The two Norterra companies combine more than 100 years of northern experience. They have each pioneered delivery methods and now intend to achieve unprecedented results.

Starting this summer, NTCL will barge dry cargo from Richmond, B.C. to customers in the Inuvialuit Settlement Region (ISR) and the Kitikmeot, using a 12,000-tonne ocean capable barge towed by an Arctic Class II tug. The barge will be towed up the west coast, around Point Barrow, Alaska and across the Beaufort Sea to deliver cargo to Arctic communities. Most cargo will be loaded into shipping containers in either Edmonton or Richmond. The containers will then be loaded onto the barge at Richmond.

When NTCL decided to offer another shipping option to its industrial and community customers in the ISR and Kitikmeot, it called on BBE to help develop a logistics solution that would enhance the service.

“BBE will coordinate all orders. We’ll ensure all booked orders are received at the dock, labelled, bar coded, manifested, loaded on the barge, and shipped to our customers as expected,” says Stuart Russell, Vice-President, Business Development at BBE. “We will also track all cargo through our web-based tracking system, so that we can provide shippers with real-time information on the status of their shipments.”

Cargo space on the west coast barges will require advanced booking via the toll free 1-866-935-6825 number.

“This new service is a more cost-effective and efficient method of shipping goods to our customers in both the Inuvialuit Settlement Region and the Kitikmeot region. It complements NTCL’s ongoing cargo service from Hay River via the Mackenzie River. Our customers will have the ability to access overseas suppliers who can now connect in the Port of Vancouver from the container ships to our big barges,” says David Foster, President of NTCL.

The two Norterra companies have worked together on numerous projects in the past. BBE and NTCL understand that collaboration is essential to providing effective logistical services in the North.

“Getting things from point A to point B in the North sometimes presents unpredictable challenges. It requires companies that have regional experience, that can troubleshoot through all circumstances and develop contingencies to address any issues. BBE has logistical expertise and knowledge of northern transport solutions. NTCL has unmatched marine expertise, experienced crews and understands the North. It’s a formidable partnership for our customers,” says Russell
