Safety training goes online at BBE

As BBE expands its network of operations, the methods of providing safety training are also expanding.

“We’re committed to establishing and maintaining a safer work environment. Health, safety and environment are very important to as. And as we are expanding our network so rapidly, it’s important to stay current in training,” says Gary Reid, President of BBE.

This rapid growth meant it was no longer manageable to get people to travel for training or to send trainers to all of BBE’s bases of operations.

“We now employ many field expediters working on projects in remote areas for our resource based clients,” says Dennis Gould, Director of Operations in Edmonton. “We are consistently striving to enhance our minimum training standards and develop the processes to implement, maintain and manage them.”

That’s why BBE is moving ahead very quickly with a new online training program developed in conjunction with the Allantra group out of Edmonton. The program allows BBE staff access to health, safety and environment information, training, standard manuals, and much more.

“BBE employees will have access to our secure web site and can complete their required training courses at their convenience. Best of all everything is tracked electronically so we can see who signed in, what courses they have been working on, what they have completed and when,” says Corey Glover, Safety Officer.

BBE can administer courses on hazardous material handling, fire extinguisher use, and even forklift training. It can also ensure staff have read and understood safety protocols such as the emergency response plan and other health and safety practices outlined in the employee handbook.

“We’ll also be able to train our employees on the policies and procedures of our clients before they are scheduled to depart for the site,” says Gould.

The site also acts as a communications tool, where management can post reference material such as employee handbooks and training manuals.  Staff can also post memos and images and locate staff contact information.

“This helps reduce the distances between our bases of operations. It keeps everyone up to date on safety and allows our staff to keep in touch on a regular basis,” said Gould.

BBE is a member of the NorTerra Inc. group of companies. NorTerra is owned by the Inuvialuit Development Corporation, on behalf of the Inuvialuit of the Western Arctic, and the Nunasi Corporation, on behalf of the Inuit of Nunavut.
